Places, routes & screen locations

Follow the books without confusing fiction with a visitor address. Every entry is labelled, sourced and careful about private property.

One fictional village, one real filming estateTwo different places: the novel’s setting and a screen location.
Coopers ChaseFictional retirement village · Kent

A setting in the novels, rather than a visitor attraction.

Englefield HouseFilming location · Berkshire

A private residence. Check official access information before planning a visit.

The drawings are symbolic settings, not architectural portraits.

Read the map key first

Story world or real world?

Fictional

A place in the novels, not a destination to search for.

Real place

A genuine city, county or country used in the story.

Screen location

A real location used to represent a fictional place on film.

Fictional

Coopers Chase

The retirement community at the centre of The Thursday Murder Club: home, meeting place and frequent starting point for the quartet’s investigations.

The screen version was represented by Englefield House; the house is not Coopers Chase in real life.
Fictional

Fairhaven

The nearby Kentish town in the club’s story world. It connects village life, local policing and the cases beyond Coopers Chase.

Treat Fairhaven as part of the fiction, not as a precise visitor address.
Real place

Kent

The real English county that anchors the novels’ imagined local geography and gives the series its south-east England atmosphere.

The books do not provide a public route to a real Coopers Chase.

Recurring places, no solutions

Settings arranged by book

These are orientation clues, not exhaustive gazetteers. Broad labels are deliberate when a publisher source does not confirm a more exact route.

Accessible illustrated routes

Two journeys, one step at a time

We Solve Murders

The first journey, kept broad to avoid inventing a precise itinerary.

  1. Steve’s English routine
  2. A private island
  3. International stops
  4. The case draws the trio together

We Chase Shadows

The publisher-confirmed trail for Amy, Rosie and Steve’s second case.

  1. Italian hills
  2. Palm Springs
  3. Barcelona
  4. Steve’s village pub

The visual line is decorative; the same route is fully expressed as an ordered list for screen readers.

Book world versus film world

Where Coopers Chase appeared on screen

Fictional setting

Coopers Chase, Kent

The retirement community belongs to the story. The novels’ imagined geography should not be used to identify or approach a real retirement community.

Screen location

Englefield House, Berkshire

Netflix identifies the Elizabethan manor as the location used to bring Coopers Chase to the screen, including the nearby church and cemetery.

Responsible location visiting

Before setting off

What is publicly accessible?

Englefield Estate says the house is a private residence and is not open to the public. The estate currently lists garden opening every Monday, including bank holidays: 10am–6pm from April to October and 10am–4pm from November to March. Check its visitor page for admission details before travelling.

Check the official visitor page ↗

The closest named rail option is Theale station; Historic Houses recommends a taxi from there to the house. Check their directions and National Rail’s station page.

Access needs

Do not assume the historic grounds are step-free. The published filming page does not give enough detail for this guide to promise wheelchair access, accessible parking or suitable paths. Contact the estate and check its current visitor information before travelling.

Keep the mystery fictional

Never enter private land, residences, closed filming areas or working parts of the estate. Follow signs, opening times and staff instructions; do not approach real retirement communities looking for story locations.

The real-life inspiration

Richard Osman described a visit to a retirement village that inspired the idea for Coopers Chase. The fictional community is not a visitor destination or a portrait of one particular residence. Read Penguin’s interview account.

Other filming locations

Englefield House and its nearby church and cemetery are the places identified in the cited Netflix filming account. No further filming location is presented here without a named production or credible reporting source.

Stay nearby

Reading and Theale are possible bases for a Berkshire trip near Englefield House. The house itself is a private residence and is not open to the public; check the estate’s garden and access information before planning a visit. For the atmosphere of the novels’ fictional Kent setting, explore a countryside stay in Kent instead.
