Selected chronology

From programme-maker to novelist

  1. Programme-maker

Osman worked behind the camera for roughly two decades and became a senior creative figure at Endemol UK. The record credits development and production work across entertainment formats; it should not be mistaken for presenting credit.

  2. Pointless: format and screen role

David Flynn and Osman developed the quiz around rewarding obscure correct answers. Osman stood in at the BBC pitch; the broadcaster then asked him to appear alongside Alexander Armstrong when the first BBC Two series launched.

  3. The format is refined

The production reduced the field from five pairs to four, a change Osman later said made more space for conversation. An early working title was Obviously; both details come from a 2013 retrospective rather than a launch document.

  4. Richard Osman’s House of Games begins

The weekday BBC Two quiz placed four celebrity contestants across a week of changing games.

  5. A debut written privately

Osman described writing The Thursday Murder Club in secret over roughly eighteen months. A retirement-community visit supplied its initial setting; a 2020 interview also records his grandfather’s Brighton police work as a personal link to detection.

  6. A repeatable writing rhythm

In a publisher essay, he described making novel-length work manageable in focused two-hour sessions of about one thousand words at a time. This is a dated account of his method, not a claim that every book followed an identical routine.

  7. The Rest Is Entertainment

Osman and journalist Marina Hyde became hosts of Goalhanger’s entertainment-industry podcast.

  8. A second mystery series

We Solve Murders introduced Steve and Amy Wheeler and author Rosie D’Antonio.

  9. The first novel reaches the screen

Netflix released the feature-film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club, produced by Amblin Entertainment.

  10. A House of Games handover

Banijay announced Osman’s departure after nine years and more than 800 episodes; Michael Sheen subsequently took over on 5 October 2026.
