A practical collector’s guide
Use publication details and the copyright page to identify an edition. Condition and personal meaning matter; unsupported “rare” labels and speculative prices do not.

How to identify a copy
Read the ISBN.Match all 13 digits; format and territory usually have different identifiers.
Check format and dimensions.A hardback, paperback, ebook and audiobook are separate editions even when the cover resembles another.
Find the publication line.“First published” names the work’s history; a number line or explicit impression statement identifies the printing more precisely.
Confirm imprint and territory.UK Penguin or Viking details should not be applied automatically to US or translated editions.
Record condition plainly.Note jacket, inscriptions, damage and provenance without turning them into a valuation.

The ISBN and measurements identify the cited current edition—not every printing ever issued. Earlier formats remain a dated checklist until their individual ISBNs are independently verified.
A signature’s presence does not authenticate it. Keep receipts, event tickets or dealer documentation with the book; do not remove an inscription merely to make a copy look cleaner.
Storage without theatre
Keep books upright, dry and out of direct sunlight. Avoid adhesive tape, pressure from overfilled shelves and plastic that traps moisture. A protective jacket should be inert and removable.
International editions
Translated titles, publishers, narrators and territories have their own records. Do not compare their identifiers with the UK list as if one must be incorrect.
